The amazing Upper Mustang Trek 2025 starts from Jomsom after a beautiful journey from Pokhara and will take you to the mysterious Shangri-La of the ancient Buddhist kingdom, known as Mustang that is also referred to as Lo. Lo was once a major part of the Tibetan empire and thus is closely connected to Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism is still being practiced in a traditional manner The villages have been built in the Tibetan style. They are white washed houses with wood burning stoves in the roofing.
In the past there was no way to travel to Upper Mustang Trek with a fully planned camping journey. Recently, a few locals have set up guesthouses and visitors are now able to stay in guesthouses at all overnight locations. While staying in the guesthouse, you will be able to join their kitchen. In Tibetan custom, the kitchen is considered to be the main element of the home and is constructed as an open-plan living area. This is why there's a better way to learn some insight into the everyday lives of Tibetans other than making meals in the kitchen!
There's more than just the tradition and culture, but also the landscape is closely linked to Tibet. Mustang is located in its shadow Dhaulagiri and is a completely deserted area with rocks of all colors and odd patterns. In this deserted terrain the villages with their vibrant colors of the fields are oases. The route was a salt caravan route of the past, where the inhabitants of Mustang traded Tibetan salt for grains from the valleys.
The ideal destination for those who want to experience the Upper Mustang Trek is the capital city of Upper Mustang, Lo- Manthang. Lo Manthang is a medieval old town, protected by a huge town wall. From the top at Lo La (3950 m) it is possible to see the town's glowing lights from the distance, which is surrounded by the barren landscape.
If you walk into Lo- Manthang at the city's entrance,, you'll be in a completely different world. It's awe-inspiring to stroll through the narrow streets. Around every corner, you'll discover tiny groups of women weaving yarn, and discussing the latest news.
In the afternoon, huge herds of goats are escorted out of the town gate and down the nearby alleyways before returning to their sheds in the town. In the city that lies in Lo Manthang you can find the King's palace which is a huge 4 story tall structure. If the King is in residence it is possible to to see him on occasion.
The king is not in authority, but is respected to his citizens. There are also a some beautiful monasteries which are impressive and large such as the ThugchenGompa, which was built in the year 1513. Go to the amchi museum or the amchi school. Amchi is a common Tibetan doctor.
Amchis exist in Lo Mangtang, which are also the official medical doctors that the King. They founded a school in order to preserve the wisdom of the past. It's also fascinating to travel on horseback to Chhoser where you can observe a tiny monastery as well as an ancient cave dwelling that is located high within the rocks.

After a hearty breakfast, we travel to Pokhara with a tourist bus (6-7 hours of drive). We will observe the stunning Trishuli as well as the Marsyangdi rivers. Pokhara is a gorgeous valley that lies on the banks of Phewa Lake, also known for its stunning view that include Annapurna, Machapuchare in the north, Dhaulagiri in the west, Manasulu and Lamjung Himal in the east. Pokhara is a tourist's lake paradise, with a variety of facilities for tourists.
We take the early flight from Jomsom. The early morning skies are clear and you can enjoy stunning mountain views as we go through two 8000er mountains that lie between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna and follow the world's deepest canyon. The scenery below is stunning. We are in Jomsom the headquarters of the district of Mustang. We begin our first steps along the trail. The trail follows a lovely route through the arid valley that runs along the Kali Gandaki River to the fortifications of Kagbeni which was an old trading post that also houses the remains of a Buddhist monastery. Kagbeni is situated just south of the area that is restricted in Upper Mustang.
After we leave Kagbeni After leaving Kagbeni, we sign our passports at the checkpoint in the restricted area. We begin our trek early in the morning to stay clear of the strong Mustang winds that blow later in the afternoon. We trek along the east banks of the river until Chuksang and on the way, we will see Mt. Nilgiri glowing in orange light from sunrays.the region along the river could be very turbulent and dusty so we'll require sunglasses and maybe an eye mask or a cloth for our noses and mouth. As we travel through Mustang's famous red sandstone pillars, as well as rock formations created by hundreds of years of erosion, We arrive at Tangbe, the town of Tangbe. It's a charming village, with white and red washed homes and beautiful barley fields and apple orchards and then we head down a small canyon that leads to Chele which is a tiny town on an mountain ridge. The spectacular location is stunning.
From Chele from Chele, we ascend an incline and continue on the steep canyon until Eklo Bhatti and ascend up to Taklam La (3,625 m/11,940 ft) which is a pass with a high elevation. After crossing the pass, and down to Samar where we can take in the stunning views from Mount Nilgiri from Samar. It's a common spot to stop for horses and mules caravans. From here we follow a downhill path that leads to a huge gorge passing Rangchyung Chorten, which is painted with black, red, and white. It's a stunning panorama of Mt. Everest in Syangboche the place where Nepali-Tibetan Sherpa, also popularly known as Solu Khumbu. They belong to the Nyingma-pa Tibetan Buddhist sect and practice their own Buddhist custom and tradition that was brought with them when they migrated out of Tibet into Nepal. The north region from Jorsale is about 113 square. km, and it is part of Sagarmatha National Park. Blue pine as well as fir and juniper forest occur in lower elevations and woodlands of rhododendron, birch and rh between 3300 to 4000 m . The trail passes through a few Juniper and then descends to Shyanmochen the tiniest village that has tea houses that are situated at 3,710m.
The day starts by climbing up another pass, which is known as The Yamda The La (3,845m/12,655 ft) and passes through an amazing landscape of desert , and some remote settlements and their surrounding crop fields. After that, the trail ascends from Shyangbochen which leads up to a valley that it descends to a large barley field in Gelling. The houses are painted white and ochre, and are constructed of stones and mud, exactly as in Mustang From Geling We then climb towards the town in Tama Gun and make our way up a mountain called Nyi La. Nyi La (4015 m/13,205ft) .descending from the Nyi La is relatively calm and from there, we climb up to a junction with the trail. where we follow the left path which takes us to Ghami.
The trek today could be through what is possibly the driest region of Mustang however, the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, beginning with the soft shapes from the northwest of rugged mountains in the west and east is more than enough to make up for the challenging climb. Finally we reach Tsarang, an extensive town spread out over about 1000 residents.
Beginning on flat ground and then we climb another pass, and take in the beautiful views of the valley beneath. It is also possible to view Lo Mathang. As we descend, we take a and then enter Lo Mathang from the north
